Each year cropcircles have brought the research community more questions
than explanations about
this strange enigma.
We are no closer to answering questions such as: Who are the circle makers?
Are they human or extraterrestrial? What do the cropcircles symbolize?
What is the message? However, what does appear evident is that the crop
circles are evolving into more complex, intricate patterns every year.
I have seen many strange and wonderful formations throughout the countryside
of England. Yet, of all I have seen during my past three summer trips
to England, I am most in awe of the fractal giants known as Julias.
The following article will provide a brief description of some of the events that took place on my most recent U.K. cropcircle expedition as Research Director with Beyond Boundaries.
On Sunday, July 28, 1996, our group met Colin Andrews, (CPRI ) at a farmers field across from Stonehenge. Colin informed us that 90% of the worlds cropcircle phenomena appear within a forty mile radius of Stonehenge.
The most recent circle was the Julia, named after a 19th century mathematician who had worked on the concept of fractals - natures geometry. Colin felt that the Julia was the most significant formation in his thirteen years of research.
The Julia was formed on July 8, 1996. The time of formation has been narrowed down to a forty-five minute window of time thanks to the following turn of events. At approximately 5:30 pm a small plane, containing a pilot and passenger, flew over a wheat field on the way to Stonehenge. They later returned by a different route. At 6:15 pm the passenger drove home after the flight on Route A303, one of the most heavily trafficked roads in England. There he saw a number of people getting out of their vehicles to observe something in the field he had just recently flown over. Curious, he too went to look. There he saw the Julia cropcircle! There was no way he could have missed the 915 foot formation from the air when he flew over just 45 minutes earlier. Interestingly, none of the many drivers during this busy rush hour period observed or reported seeing anything unusual or anyone in the field during this time, yet everyones attention seemed captured once the formation appeared.
On Tuesday night, July 30, 1996, we met members of the CPRI research team at the Barge Inn, a well known pub that serves as a meeting place for cropcircle enthusiasts and researchers. There was a great buzz about the place and we learned that a new formation, later known as the Triple Spiral Julia, had been discovered near Windmill Hill, near Avebury. Avebury is an ancient megalithic site which has had several cropcircles appear in the fields nearby just like Stonehenge. We met a young man who had walked into the formation earlier during the day and showed us his sketches of the pattern. The new formation looked like three Julias forming a spiraling pinwheel pattern.
The next morning, before we left on a chartered helicopter to look at several newly formed cropcircles we received a call from Colin Andrews informing us that we would be the first group of people to fly over the Triple Spiral Julia.
The first crop formation we saw from the air that day hasnt been named yet. Now considered the largest cropcircle ever formed it was three quarters of a mile long and ran the full length of the wheat field. The formation consisted of a large line connected with a series of small circles. There was a large circle in the middle of the field with an unusual standing wheat pattern in its center. It looked somewhat like a crude side view symbol of a sphinx. There was also a large teardrop pattern outside the large circle. The whole formation was incredible.
We then, finally, flew over the Triple Spiral Julia one of the most awesome formations I have ever seen. It reminded me of a pinwheel, but actually consisted of 194 circles in its three arms. Each arm looked very similar to the Stonehenge Julia. All three connected into one large circle.
We returned by car to the Triple Spiral Julia later that day. Each circle in the formation had intricate spiraling patterns with tufts of wheat standing straight up in the center of each circle. There were a number of people walking with dowsing rods and small crystal pendulums.
(Dowsing is an ancient art that can be used to detect water sources and various types of energy). I pulled out my dowsing rods and held them in each hand. The rods pointed forward as I walked up to one of the circles. As I neared the edge of the circle, the rods splayed out opposite to each other. I walked backward and the rods returned to their forward position. I then walked forward to the circles edge and again the rods pointed outward. I observed a number of other dowsers who had the same result I did.
I later decided to walk barefoot. To my surprise, I felt the same identical sensation felt when I walked barefoot in another cropcircle earlier that week. I had a strange sensation all over my body. I felt suddenly dehydrated and a numbness in the center of my forehead. I then lay down flat on my stomach and rested in a spiral of wheat. Afterward I felt rejuvenated and peaceful.
I later found out that there were other Julia type patterns that had appeared after I had returned to the United States. I am grateful that I had the privilege to be able to walk into these magnificent creations.
