BELEM, BRAZIL: CONTACT IN CATHOLIC CHURCHYARD

By Jose Luiz Lanhoso Martins

Copy of Letter from Belem

Beyond Boundaries just received this week a beautiful rainforest green envelope covered with large colorful Brazilian postage stamps and containing this study and followup of a UFO landing and witnessed abduction that took place on the patio of a Catholic church in the Guama District, in the city of Belem, State of Para, Brazil, on April 17, 1996. The subject of the following story is Alfredo de Oliveira Mendes, born on 17 July, 1969, and whose profession is a Sacristan, meaning that he is the sexton or maintenance man of the church. The account of the study is written by Jose Luiz Lanhoso Martins Filho who is MUFON Estate director, Belem Brazil.

Alfredo's Story

The church of St. Peter and St. Paul’s devotees is found in the poor district of Guama, in Belem, capital of the northern Brazilian state of Para. The church is a very simple building composed by four sheds in a U shape, one of them being the church proper and the other three the classroom and meeting hall sponsored by the parish for the local community. The grounds are large, and the internal patio is a square with roughly 100 feet on a side.

This particular night in mid April around 1:30 am the church’s sacristan, on the way to his room after another exhausting work day, found himself facing a UFO a few meters away. The story was reported in the local newspapers and on the local radio stations because other witnesses had called the police.

The reason that led us to visit the site and talk to the sacristan was a picture published in one of the papers showing the young man next to an impressive mark left on the lawn by the alleged UFO We of the Consciousness Expansion Nucleus, (the name of our investigation group), decided immediately to go to the site and study this mark and also to invite the sacristan, Alfredo Mendes, to come to our meetings for a deeper study of this event.

Commander Pinon, Professor Daibes, and myself went to the church to meet Alfredo, a “simpatico” young man of 27, very simple and very busy, for he manages a church that renders countless services to the local poor, supporting children, teenagers and older people.

The church was full of people, all of them busy helping with the preparations for the celebration of Mothers Day, the very next day. Despite the improper day and time, Alfredo was very willing to talk to us and, after presentations were made, he said: “See, until a few days ago I didn’t believe much in flying saucers, but now I’ll tell you something: THEY DO EXIST!”

We laughed at the way he said it and told him that we also believed, and that we were there to hear about his experiences and to share ours with him.

Alfredo invited us in and we walked to the patio, where, in the middle of the lawn, he showed us a circular mark of dried grass surrounded by green grass. Alfredo started telling us what had happened and, stunned by the vision of that mark, I couldn’t decide whether I should examine it or listen to his tale. I am sure the same was happening to Pino and Daibes.

I immediately identified a number of characteristic features which made me certain we were facing a case worth of deeper studies. For, as long as I knew from all publications and reports I’d heard of, such a strong and detailed mark had never been seen before.

We will go into that mark later, for now, let’s stay with Alfredo’s report in order to understand the event in a chronological order.

Alfredo told the following story: “Every night, after the priest goes home, I lock up the church and go to my room to sleep. That night, some ten days ago, the priest left very late, around 1:30 in the morning. I walked him to the street and came back locking everything up as I always do, for I manage the church from here and sleep in that little room over there, with a window and a door opening onto the patio. When I closed the gate and turned to cross the patio and go to my room, I noticed a very strong light coming from one of those trees across the grounds. That same moment, the light was already here over the patio, going up and down and from side to side. I was scared, and I started yelling and knocking on the room’s door to wake my roommate. He opened the door and saw the ship just hovering there, but in a few seconds it left in the opposite direction from which it had come. It was unbelievable!

Two days ago, I had the grass mowed for it was too tall and the church will be full for Mothers Day and everything has to be tidy. I noticed the boys who were mowing the grass were looking at this spot and discussing what could have killed the grass that way. It was when I saw the mark that I realized it had been made by that thing.”

Alfredo went on: “A strange fact I noticed is that, when I saw the ship, I was here by the room’s door, knocking and yelling. I can’t remember having crossed the patio, for I would have had to go past the ship. Even though I was yelling at the top of my lungs, my friend told me he woke up with my pounding on the door, but never heard my voice.”

The more Alfredo talked about what had happened, the more convinced I became that he was telling us the truth, because of the little details that only those who have studied this subject in depth or those who have gone through similar experiences can know.

As he went on talking, I started remembering other cases, and, suddenly, I interrupted him to ask:

“Do you remember what time it was when all this happened?” And Alfredo replied promptly: “Of course, I looked at my watch. It was exactly two o’clock in the morning.” I noticed that he stopped speaking and remained thoughtful for awhile maybe having the same thoughts I was having. After the priest left at 1:30am, he couldn’t have spent more than ten to fifteen minutes to lock two doors and get to the patio. Thus, between the time the priest left and the moment he got to his room, spending no more than fifteen minutes to lock the doors and seeing the ship that according to him stayed only for a few seconds hovering thirty feet from the ground, there were some fifteen minutes missing! BRAZIL CHURCH LANDING (cont.) I noticed that he was worried for a moment, thinking perhaps that I could be wondering if he was giving us a correct description of what had happened, it he wasn’t making things up or not paying attention to the small details.

But these little details are very telling.Without disclosing my satisfaction to him, I tried to reassure him, for I had the intention of subjecting him to a hypnotic regression, and the less I told him, the better it would be; this way we could be sure he wouldn’t be subject to undue influences. I told him he was giving us a very good description, and that it was normal for the people who have this kind of experience not to bother with niceties of detail.

After he told us his story, we sat chatting for awhile and then I asked Alfredo if he couldn’t tell us the whole story again, taking his time and answering a few questions I would put to him along the way. I had my video camera on me already, so this second narrative was taped.

The next day, Marisa and I decided to go back to the site so we could draw the mark and measure it up precisely.

Drawing of the site

Alfredo met us, and since I had the drawing pad, I asked him to try making a sketch of what he had seen. He promptly drew the ship and gave us a verbal explanation of what he was drawing. I noticed he was drawing a top view of the ship,l and asked him: “Alfredo, you told us you had seen the ship hovering 30 feet above the ground, and that this was the time you could observe its details from up close.”

“Yes, this is how it went,” he answered.

“So, how could you see things that were on the top of the ship if you were looking at it from below?” Again he remained silent, maybe wondering about what I could be thinking of. He couldn’t imagine that his very uncertainties were convincing me all the more that he had been a victim of an abduction.

This happened on May 11, Saturday, the day before Mothers Day. After this I had to go on a trip and, on the 22nd, still traveling, I called him on the phone to know how things were going. Alfredo himself answered the phone and we talked for a few minutes. He told me he was sleeping well again, with no need for sleeping pills, but with his window locked, for he still didn’t have the nerve to leave it open during the night. He also said that he had been visited by two weird ladies who had heard of the mark and, together with a young man, had come to see the mark, which was already becoming famous. Alfredo was glad to let them in, but soon was sorry he did that.

Right after coming in, one of the ladies closed her eyes, raised her hands and started walking to and fro, saying that she was feeling the energy left behind by the beings, and that she was feeling their presence and “other craziness”, in the words of Alfredo himself.

When they saw the mark, the young man went on his knees, sniffing the ground where the grass was dead, while the other lady placed herself inside the circle, saying that she was being cured by the extraterrestrial energy and that the next day she would bring her brother, who had heart trouble, to be cured.

Afraid of what harm ufolatras like these could do inside the church, Alfredo showed them out, telling them the priest would have the lawn “fixed” so no mark would be visible, for he didn’t want the church full of strange people and would forbid the entrance of those who didn’t belong there.

I told Alfredo that unfortunately this kind of thing would always happen with people who go through this kind of experience, and that probably this wouldn’t be the last time. I asked him how he had felt since the day we talked, if anything was different in his way of acting, thinking, during the night, etc.

He told me that most of the time he had been all right, except for one day, the 17th of May, when he felt restless and had a kind of cramp or itching all over his body. At a certain time, that same day, his nose started bleeding for no reason and stopped right after.

For me, this was another clear sign.

Since our first meeting I invited Alfredo to come see us for a hypnotic regression, so we could recover the things he might not remember. He agreed when I first did it, but I noticed he was still reluctant after many other such invitations. I didn’t insist, letting him take his time, and a few months later he came to my house for the regression.
