Examining the Facts!

by Irene Bott

Of the many tools which government and military agencies have at their disposal to both monitor and track unidentified flying objects, one of the most important is undoubtedly radar.

For decades, both military and civilian radar operators throughout the world have reportedly tracked UFOs - sometimes truly vast in size - flying at near-impossible speeds over a whole host of nations. Consider the evidence in hand:

It is perhaps significant that one of the earliest examples of a radar-UFO incident occurred in the United Kingdom no less than five months before pilot Kenneth Arnold's historic UFO encounter in June 1947! It was 16 January of that year, and strange, fast-moving targets were plotted on radar over-flying the North Sea at an incredible speed; and despite the fact that Royal Air Force interceptors were scrambled, the UFOs easily made a hasty exit.

Interestingly, however, according to Captain Edward J. Ruppelt of the US Air Force, the radar-originated UFO reports of January 1947 found their way into a Top Secret USAF study of the UFO phenomenon - the 'Estimate of the Situation' - in 1948. Crucial, however, is the fact that the document in question was later ordered burnt by high level sources within the USAF!

Thanks to the provisions of the British Government's 'Thirty Year Ruling' and a number of sources who have been willing to speak openly, we now know that the British radar encounters of January 1947 did not stand alone.

During a British military exercise - Operation Bulldog - of 1949, a truly huge UFO, estimated to be the size of a sea-going liner, was tracked on military radar sets from Kent to Yorkshire! And to demonstrate the concern shown by the authorities, all of those involved were sworn to total secrecy.

Moreover, in 1952, Nick Redfern's father, Frank, served as a radar mechanic at RAF Neatishead, Norfolk, and recalled several occasions when fast-moving UFOs were monitored on radar screens at the base; and once again, the stamp of official secrecy came down hard: 'Anyone speaking

about these events will be in serious breach of the Official Secrets Act! Do you understand?' the radar staff at RAF Neatishead were informed.

Similarly in 1953 and 1956 the Air Ministry circulated a memorandum advising RAF staff involved in any and all radar-UFO incidents to forward all the evidence to Whitehall with the utmost speed.

I quote from one such report of 1957, in which radar operators at RAF West Freugh, Scotland, tracked a fleet of UFOs overrflying Scottish airspace. As the document states: 'It was noted by the radar operators that the sizes of the echoes were considerably larger than would be expected from normal aircraft. In fact they considered that the size was nearer that of a ship's echo.' Again, this reiterates what occurred during Operation Bulldog in 1949.

Bringing matters more up to date, in late 1980 yet another radar tracking of a UFO was made at RAF Neatishead. In this case, the UFO was tracked on ground-based radar, 'defied all convention', and out-manoeuvered a RAF Phantom aircraft, the pilot of which described the UFO as a 'very bright light in front of him'.

Perhaps the most pertinent and astonishing statement, however, was one made to Nick Redfern by Squadron Leader Mark Watson of London Air Traffic Control Centre (Military) in 1996. Commenting on what are known as 'unknown radar-returns' in military circles, Watson advised that during a normal working day 'many' things are observed on radar 'about which civilian and military radar controllers have no knowledge'! Consider that the next time you fly to Spain for your summer holiday...

Having looked at the British Government's considerable body of radar-originated UFO evidence, let us now turn our attention to the United States of America. Notably, we see a very similar story.

To illustrate this, consider the evidence provided in now declassified US Government and military papers of the 1950s. Of the many such papers now at our disposal, one of the most fascinating concerns the radar tracking of a UFO of both impressive speed and dimensions in the vicinity of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. As this report is particularly fascinating, I relate its contents below:

On September 10, 1951, an AN/MPG-1

radar set picked up a fast moving low flying target, exact altitude undetermined, at

approximately 11.10 am, southeast of Fort Monmouth at a range of about 12,000 yards. The target appeared to approximately follow the coast line, changing its range only slightly but changing its azimuth rapidly. The radar set was switched to full azimuth tracking which normally is fast enough to track jet aircraft, but in this case was too slow to be resorted to...

...This target also presented an unusually strong return for aircraft being comparable in strength to that usually received from a coastal ship. The operator initially identified target as a ship and then realized that it could not be a ship after he observed its extreme speed...

...The target was observed to be changing in elevations at an extremely rapid rate, but change in range was so slow the operator believed the target must have risen nearly vertically...

One year later, following a stunning series of UFO encounters in the Washington DC vicinity, the U.S. Air Force made a number of highly-significant statements to elements of the American Government. Commenting on the calibre of UFO reports received through official channels, the USAF stated that the most credible were:

...Those sightings which are reported by pilots and for which there is additional corroboration, such as recording by radar or sighting from the ground. This latter classification constitutes two or three per cent of the total number of sightings, but that they are the most difficult to explain. Some of these sightings are originally reported from the ground, then are observed by pilots in the air and then are picked up by radar instruments. In these instances there is no doubt that these individuals reporting the sightings actually did see something in the sky.

This statement receives additional support from a 1958 USAF document concerning the radar-tracking of several UFOs seen near the Panama Canal.

In a mind-blowing report, it was revealed that when USAF personnel tried to illuminate the UFOs with the aid of ground based searchlights, the radar operators at Fort Amador were stunned to see their instruments clock the UFOs ascending from a height of 2,000 to 10,000 feet in a mere five seconds!

Are alien spacecraft routinely tracked

on radar by military agencies across the world?

More important, the follow-up report is clear in its conclusions: 'This was such a rapid movement that the Track Radar, which was locked on target, broke the Track Lock and was unable to keep up with ascent of the objects. As Track Radar can only be locked on a solid object, which was done in the case of the two unidentified flying objects, it was assumed that the two objects were solid.

Equally astounding revelations have been forthcoming from Belgium. When the country was overrun by numerous 'black triangles' on March 30 - 31, 1990, the pilots of two Belgian Air Force F-16 fighter planes vectored into the area, locked onto the UFOs via their on-board radar systems and monitored them undertaking all manner of seemingly-impossible aerial acrobatics, including: slowing down to a mere 25 miles per hour, dropping in height nearly 7,000 feet in one second and accelerating to astounding speeds!!!

Commenting on the reports received from the pilots, Colonel Wilfred De Brouwer, the Belgian Air Force Chief of Operations, stated authoritatively: '(The pilots) are young guys, and they think it was something special. They're convinced that it was something.'

As these encounters undisputably make clear, on numerous occasions dating back more than half a century, both military and civil radar has proved its worth when it comes to the issue of whether or not UFOs have been detected by our Earth-based technology.

Of course, intriguing questions remain: Why, in an age when we can build and fly 'stealth' aircraft which can 'mask' themselves from detection by radar, do the UFO intelligences not employ a similar technology? Is it perhaps that they are so far advanced that they simply do not care whether or not they are open to detection? And, if that is the case, is it an indicator that those piloting the UFOs know that we are not in a position to counter their activities in our airspace? Crucial questions which require crucial answers...
